SUMMER

Chicago Justice Project Internship

My LSJ Crime, Politics, and Justice class from Winter Quarter led me to this internship with the Chicago Justice Project. My professor, Magda Boutros, did her PhD in Evanston, Illinois where I am from, which led me to speak with her about potential internship opportunities. I then applied and was accepted to join CJP as a summer intern, specifically working on the fundraising team. This allowed me to see the inner workings of a nonprofit organization, and taught me a lot about how overworked and underpaid nonprofit workers often are. As an intern, I wrote letters of intent to foundations to request funding for CJP, and collaborated with other college students on my team to meet deadlines. Criminal justice reform is something I am particularly interested in, so it was also a beneficial experience to explore this topic while feeling as though I was connected to my local community. Attached is a Letter of Intent that I wrote during my internship. This also taught me an important lesson that professors want to help, and that they are very willing to point you in the right direction if you express interest about their work!

Summer Jobs

Going home for the summer meant that I was returning to two of my high school jobs. During the day, I worked at a pre school, which meant that I got to chase kids around a park playing Zombie all day. At night, I worked Front of House at Union, a restaurant and music venue. I LOVED Union, and met such great people (and musicians) through working there. The grind over the summer meant that I could save up money for when I returned to school, so even when it felt thankless it was very worth it. I also loved that my job at Union meant that I got to bring my passion for music into the workplace. Live music has always been such a passion of mine, and it meant a lot to be able to bring pizza back into the green room for some very cool artists.
